Doctor Who star David Tennant stars in phone hacking scandal drama The Hack, next month on ITV
The Hack screenwriter Jack Thorne has confirmed the seven part drama will begin next month on ITV1 and ITVX. The series stars Doctor Who’s David Tennant as Nick Davies, an investigative journalist investigating the phone hacking scandal. The real world scandal rocked the UK, with some of the most powerful in the media called to account. Set over a course of a decade, The Hack tracks Davies’ efforts as he slowly closes in on proof of a conspiracy among the British tabloid press. He uncovers a huge plot to illegally hack the phones of celebrities, politicians, police officers, and crime and terrorism victims.
Meanwhile, in parallel to Davies’ efforts, police detective Dave Cook (Robert Carlyle) investigates the murder of a private detective. It’s a case which leads Cook down a path into the heart of the conspiracy. Tennant has described taking part in telling the true story of systemic corruption at the highest levels of the British media “a true honour.”
The rest of the cast list for The Hack reads like a who’s who of modern British television. Naturally, this means there’s a healthy crossover of names familiar to fans of Doctor Who. The series also co-stars Eve Myles (Torchwood) and Katherine Kelly (Class). Also featured are Dougray Scott (Hide), Toby Jones (Amy’s Choice), Pip Torrens (Human Nature), Phil Daniels (The Fires of Pompeii), Steve Pemberton (Silence in the Library), Paul Kaye (Under the Lake), Daniel Ryan (Midnight), Robert Bathurst (Flux), and Nadia Albina (Flux).

The Hack
Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real-life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, and running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle.
