Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and Chris Chibnall will be representing Doctor Who at SDCC this year — plus a mystery guest!

San Diego Comic Con is a virtual event again this year, but the biggest convention in the world will still playing host to a Doctor Who panel. This year, the panel will include Jodie Whittaker (the Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yaz Khan) and lead writer Chris Chibnall. Moreover, after teasing that the panel will include a special guest whose name is being kept under wraps for now.

The identity of the secret panelist already has fans guessing. Presumably it’s some guest star or recurring character that’s yet to be revealed to the public. And, more than that, an actor well enough known that it’s a surprise worth keeping. Or, alternatively, someone who plays an existing Doctor Who character who’ll be making a surprise return in Series 13. Unless it’s someone on the other end of the camera – a big name director or writer joining the team for an episode this year? Essentially, it could be anyone. But it’s all very exciting all the same.

Expect an update on Doctor Who Series 13… and perhaps our first teaser trailer

Whomever the mystery guest is, we can expect an update on the progress of Series 13. Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill are currently filming the new season in the UK ahead of its planned broadcast later this year. Likely topics will include the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on production, Doctor Who receiving its first ever Emmy nomination (for Revolution of the Daleks), and hints at what returning monsters and villains the Doctor and Yaz will encounter. And while there’s no official word as yet, the SDCC tradition of giving us our first look at the news season will likely be maintained. So keep an eye out for a Series 13 teaser trailer during the panel.

San Diego Comic Con will be taking place from the 23rd to the 25th of July. This year it will be a free online event streaming worldwide. The Doctor Who panel will be on Sunday the 25th at 10am local time/6pm in the UK. Exact details of where and how to stream the event will be updated closer to the time.
