A distinguished actor with a lengthy career, it was only a matter of time before Robert Bathurst would appear in Doctor Who. This week, in Survivors of the Flux, he finally will.

The trailer for Doctor Who: Flux revealed a number of guest stars. Perhaps one of the most recognisable actors to be featured was Robert Bathurst. You may not have remembered his name but you definitely recognised him. And for good reason. His career has seen him appear in a wide variety of television programmes and movies. However, Bathurst has not appeared in Doctor Who on television. Until now.

Robert Bathurst is probably best remembered for his role as David Marsden in the popular ITV series Cold Feet. The original run lasted from 1997 to 2003 before returning for a second stint from 2016 to 2020, Bathurst appearing in every episode. Such was the critical reception and popularity of Cold Feet it won multiple awards including a British Academy Television Award, and multiple British Comedy and National Television Awards. Cold Feet is however just one of many television series that he has appeared in.

TV series aplenty

Over his lengthy career Robert Bathurst has featured in other popular series including Downton Abbey, Toast of London, Dracula and Wild at Heart. Sci-fi fans might remember Bathurst as Todhunter in the very first episode of Red Dwarf. Some may even remember him from the music video for Westlife’s version of ‘Uptown Girl‘. Recently Robert Bathurst was cast as Sgt. Wilson, the role originally played by John Le Mesurier, in the recreation of the three missing episodes of Dad’s Army. He’d also played Le Mesurier in a biopic about the actor’s wife and Carry On stalwart Hattie Jacques, played by Ruth Jones.

Speaking about his first appearance in Doctor Who Robert Bathurst said: “People say Doctor Who is science fiction. Fiction? No it’s all real, and it’s as scary to do as it looks. Great to be part of it.” Bathurst has however contributed to the Doctor Who: Doom Coalition series for Big Finish. This will however be his first appearance in the television show. With details still being kept under wraps could it be that Bathurst is a member of UNIT? Brigadier Farquhar perhaps? We’ll find out soon…

Doctor Who: Flux continues with Chapter 5: Survivors of the Flux this Sunday on BBC One and BBC America.
