Peter Capaldi gets a Criminal Record on Apple TV+ as a senior police officer combating the reopening of one of his old cases

Former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi will soon be appearing on screens again in thriller The Devil’s Hour. But he already has his next role lined up. He’ll be starring in Criminal Record for Apple TV+ as Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. Hegarty is an experienced and well connected senior police officer who finds his legacy thrown into jeopardy. An anonymous phone call to the police causes one of Hegarty’s early cases to be re-examined. And young Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo, The Good Fight, Darkwater Fell) takes up the assignment of investigating the original inquiry’s findings. Lenker immediately comes into conflict with Hegarty, determined to prove that he was right. But was he? And if not, did he simply botch the original investigation or is something more sinister at work?

The action unfolds in present day London, with Apple describing the drama as touching on issues of race, and institutional failings within the Metropolitan Police. They’ve commissioned the series for a season of eight one hour episodes. We still don’t know an exact air date for Criminal Record, and filming has only just begun. But Blogtor Who expects it to be either some time late this year or, more likely, early 2023. Apple TV+ is one of several streaming services to have proliferated over the past several years. They’ve distinguished themselves, however, by adopting a strategy of creating almost entirely new content, without using archive material or leveraging established media franchises.

Capaldi will also star in The Devil’s Hour later this year

In the meantime, viewers can soon see the Doctor Who star in The Devil’s Hour on rival streaming platform Amazon Prime. Currently in post production, the mystery thriller stars Peter Capaldi as a suspected serial killer. It doesn’t have a set date either. But Blogtor expects it to arrive much sooner this year, with Amazon having already released the first trailer.
