2019 sees only the second New Year’s Day Special in Doctor Who’s history.

As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring from across the centuries of Earth’s history. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?

The New Year’s Day Special replaces the traditional Christmas Special, The previous New Year Day specials were all set at least partly at Christmas, after all.

Are ancient bones the omen of the rise of an ancient evil?

The photo from the episode itself also shows an unusually dapper Ryan and Graham. Perhaps they’re fresh from a New Year’s Eve party? Meanwhile, the TARDIS fam are seen deep in examination of a set of bones. The organization of the bones suggests an archaeological dig rather than a murder site, which would certainly fit with the ‘evil stirring from across the centuries.’ Surely not the return of the classic monster, the Fendahl?

Showrunner Chris Chibnall says of the new monster, “We’re thrilled to be starting the New Year with a bang on BBC One, as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends face a terrifying alien threat in an action-packed, hour-long special adventure for all the family.”

Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, described the episode as “treat”, saying, “We’re delighted the Doctor and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode. The Doctor’s fans are in for a special treat on the first day of the new year.”

Clothes Maketh the Doctor

The iconic image above also rings the changes. The Doctor has a new scarf! Blogtor Who likes to think it was a Christmas present from her fam. It’s certainly easy to imagine the three of them seeking suggestions in Henrick’s, telling an assistant “Hmm… she likes rainbows?” The good news for cosplayers and all fans with necks is that Blogtor Who is 99% certain the Doctor’s new scarf is a Paul Smith Rainbow Edge Scarf in Blue. The bad news is that it sold out everywhere online within an hour or so of the photo being released.

The Doctor’s coat also looks much whiter in these pictures, as opposed to its usual light blue/lilac shades. Does she have a variant coat, in the same way, that Tennant and Capaldi’s second seasons introduced alternate versions of their outfits in different colours? It could just be lighting, of course. After all, who could forget when everyone thought her coat was beige, based on the very first series 11 images?

The Doctor Who New Year’s Special by Chris Chibnall airs on New Year’s Day on BBC One. It stars Jodie Whittaker (The Doctor), Mandip Gill (Yasmin Khan), Bradley Walsh (Graham O’Brien) and Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair). It’s directed by Wayne Yip. Further details of transmission time and guest stars as Blogtor Who receives them.

In the meantime, the adventure continues…
