Doctor Who Magazine‘s Special Editions series returns for a new issue, this time devoted to the show’s production design

Across their Special Editions to date, Doctor Who Magazine have explored the many different elements which go into making Doctor Who, from music, to special effects, to costume design, putting the individuals who’ve contributed their talents to the show behind the scenes in the spotlight. Now, they’re back with another instalment, this time turning their attention to production design.

Production designers are some of Doctor Who‘s unsung heroes, despite having played a central role in the series’ production ever since it began in 1963. They’re responsible for bringing outlandish script concepts to life by creating alien creatures, bizarre planets, as well as recreating historical settings for one of the BBC’s most demanding productions.

Doctor Who Magazine’s latest special edition explores the production designer’s craft in depth via rarely-seen images exclusive interviews with designers who’ve contributed to the classic and revived series, including:

  • Jeremy Bear (The Mutants)
  • Nigel Curzon (Terror of the Zygons)
  • Arwel Wyn Jones (production designer on the 2018 series)
  • Michael Pickwoad (production designer on the 2010-17 series)
  • Jon Pusey (The Pirate Planet)
  • Stephen Scott (Mawdryn Undead)
  • Dafydd Shurmer (production designer from the 2020 series)
  • Edward Thomas (production designer on the 2005-10 series)
  • Tom Yardley-Jones (The Leisure Hive)

Other highlights of the issue include:

  • Features on the design of Doctor Who in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s
  • Bill Constable’s previously unpublished designs for the 1965 movie Dr. Who and the Daleks
  • Barry Newbery’s designs for The Aztecs
  • Recreating sets for The Evil of the Daleks with its designer, Chris Thompson
