The Daleks invade Southbank for the big screen resurrection of a classic story

To mark the June 18th release of Doctor Who: The Collection Season 12 on Blu-Ray, the British Film Institute are holding a special screening on the 23rd of June at BFI Southbank. The presentation will feature the newly and lovingly restored film version of 1975 classic Genesis of the Daleks. Tickets go on sale general today at 4pm BST, but BFI Champions get early access and can buy them now.

It’s often forgotten that 2005’s The Christmas Invasion was not actually the first Doctor Who Christmas Special. Christmas outings for Doctor Who were a regular fixture of the 1970s too. However in those days the specials were not brand new stories. They were recent classics edited into exciting and fast paced movies to sit comfortably between Where Eagles Dare and Oliver! Although “omnibus” is often a dirty word in Doctor Who fan circles, these specials were sensitively and expertly planned and edited by those involved in the original production themselves. And in 1975 Philip Hinchcliffe personally oversaw a brand new edit of Genesis of the Daleks. An edit that has since gone unseen… until now.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine at the start of this year, Hinchliffe said “It was quite fun really to pace up the show … You lost things and you had hard choices to make … and yet … it was quite a nice benefit to pace things up and I think it was an improvement.”

Hinchcliffe himself will be attending the showing and it will be followed by a Q&A session where audience members will have a chance to hear his thoughts on the original serial, the editing process for the special version, and the new restoration.
