It’s a rematch made in Hell – the Tenth Doctor battles the War Master!
In 2007, Sir Derek Jacobi supplied one of Doctor Who’s most heart thumping moments as his kindly Professor Yana remembers his true self and hisses “I. Am. The Master!” But after only a couple of scenes his Master of silk and steel regenerated into the anarchic John Simm incarnation. For the past four years, and to great popular acclaim, Jacobi has reprised his role as the Master who fought the Time War for Big Finish Productions. Starring in his own series, The War Master, he’s been established as the Master who always wins. But in his seventh series he encounters a version of the Doctor as he’s never known him before… David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.
Self Defence, due in June 2022, contains four thrilling new stories, including an explosive showdown with the Tenth Doctor. David Tennant guest-starring in the final episode, The Last Line, fifteen years after they first met on television.
“What a treat to get to do a story with Derek!”
David Tennant explains why a return bout with Jacobi’s Master appealed to him. “One of the joys of these Big Finish stories is that any little corner of the Doctor Who universe can be re-explored – and what a treat to get to do a story with Derek! There’s something so vivid in those moments when Derek became the Master on TV. It feels very natural that that character should be expanded and have all these stories to tell because there was so much going on there.”
Director Scott Handcock describes Self-Defence as “a thrill to pull together.” He continues “We have four brilliant scripts from Lou Morgan, Una McCormack, Lizbeth Myles and Lizzie Hopley and an incredible guest cast across the stories – plus the Tenth Doctor himself getting propelled back into the Time War for the box set’s conclusion! And given that Derek and David only shared a look as Doctor and Master on screen, it’s great to hear them face off against each other properly; and for the Master to have no idea who this Doctor is!”
