The Church on Ruby Road and The Daleks in Colour get their DVD and Blu-ray releases this February
The next couple of months will bring multiple new Doctor Who releases for fans to keep in their collections. Exact dates and covers are now being revealed for The Daleks in Colour and The Church on Ruby Road.
First up will the Doctor’s most recent adventure as The Church on Ruby Road arrives on both DVD and Blu-ray on Friday the 12th of February. The release “contains bonus features,” but details of what exactly those might be are still unknown. There’s a good chance, however, that it will include the Christmas episode of Doctor Who Unleashed. Interestingly, there won’t be an accompanying Steelbook edition of The Church on Ruby Road. That will likely add to speculation that a box set of Ncuti Gatwa’s first full series later this year will include the story. (Though we;ll have to see whether that will be really say “Doctor Who Season One” on the cover.)
The Daleks in Colour will present the new full colour feature edit alongside the seven episode black and white original
February 19th brings The Daleks in Colour. The new edition of the Daleks’ 1963-4 debut aired on BBC Four last November, colourised and edited down to a pacy 75 minutes. It was an experiment in reaching out to audiences that perhaps found the three hour, black and white original intimidating.
Though fans of the original shouldn’t fear, as the seven part serial is also included in this release in all its original glory. All of the extras from the original DVD release of The Daleks are here too. But there will also be a new 15 minute behind the scenes documentary about the colourisation project. The Daleks in Colour will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Steelbook. All three packages include the unedited version, but be aware that they’ll be on a DVD disc. So to see it in HD we’ll have to wait for the inevitable remastering for The Collection.
The Celestial Toymaker follows on DVD, Blu-ray and Steelbook soon
Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for a cover and confirmed release date for the next Doctor Who animation, The Celestial Toymaker. Recreating the Giggle villain’s first appearance from 1966, the new computer animation will have alternative black and white and colour versions to choose from. The surviving episode, The Final Test, will also be remastered, while there will also be a documentary about the making of the animation. There’s no official confirmation that new telesnap reconstructions of the three missing episodes will be included. However, it seems a near certainty given the pattern of earlier releases. The set will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Steelbook.
Intriguingly, even though there’s no announced release date, the Amazon.co.uk entry for The Celestial Toymaker may provide a clue. The visible date listed for users has a generic placeholder, but the code in the page source contains two different dates. Both the 12th and 19th of February are listed there so time will tell if either, or neither, is true.
