The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has details of the first three episodes of series 10. Talk recently has been episode 1 ‘The Pilot’, an introduction to new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie). Now episode 2 is the Doctors introduction to his new companion to the wonders of the universe.
Episode 2 from writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce (In the Forest of the Night) is titled ‘Smile’ and is a proper trip in the TARDIS for Bill to a new world and the first meeting with the Emojibots. “I had a conversation with a great guy called Professor Tim O’Brien at Jodrell Bank,” says Cottrell-Boyce. “He said if we ever do colonise space – and it’s such an obvious thing – what we will do is send robots ahead to build the environment so it will be ready. To which I thought, Oh yes brilliant!”
So this new story developed with a colony world of Gliese 581 D, a beautiful and warm utopia – on the surface at least and where the Doctor and Bill come across the tiny-bird like Vardies and their user interface. The Emjoibots look cute and are humanoid in the way they communicate but this is where the scares for this episode generate from. “I love watching what happens with emojis, how people use them for different things and change the meaning of them; a universal language of some sort”, Cotterell-Boyce adds.
We have the Vardies and the Emojibots but where are the colonists. A mission of discovery for team TARDIS lies ahead. This introduces us to new guest cast members Mina Anwar as Goodthing, Kaizer Akhtar as Praiseworthy and Ralf Little as Steadfast.
‘Smile’ was filled in Spain at the stunning City of Arts and Science Museum in Valencia, a superb futuristic location for episode 2.
You can hear more from writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine out now.
