The End of Time: Part One

First Broadcast December 25th 2009 @ 6.00pm (12.04m viewers)

The beginning of the end. David Tennant’s universally popular Tenth incarnation of The Doctor bows out with much fanfare with a two-part finale spread over Christmas 2009 and New Year 2010. Somehow like ‘Logopolis’ and ‘The Caves of Androzani’ long before, there is an atmosphere of impending dread. A melancholy closing in around our hero. The Doctor also gets a sense of things to come leading to a beautiful scene with Wilfred Mott in a café.

Memorable Moment (Spoiler Warning)

Bernard Cribbins is a national treasure. Fact. Although he’s widely remembered for being the voice of the Wombles, for some it was his role as Mr Perks in The Railway Children that cemented his place in the hearts of the nation. His role as Wilf in Doctor Who would make us fall in love with him once again. The scene in the café opposite David Tennant also reminds us what a great actor he is. It is beautifully performed by both actors and just a hint of the emotion still to come.

As with most Part Ones, see movies such as Harry Potter and the Death Hallows, the Hunger Games: Mockingjay and Twilight: Breaking Dawn, their only purpose is to set things up for the finale. Although ‘The End of Time’ has the task of seeing off the Tenth Doctor there is so much going on. Not least with the return of the Master. Plus the Naismith plot line and Donna’s reappearance before finally, the Time Lords make a triumphant return to Doctor Who. Best of all Timothy Dalton, who starred in two James Bond films and Flash Gordon, was not just the Narrator of the tale but the President of the Time Lords. It all set things up beautifully for Part Two on New Years Day 2010.
