The Next Doctor

First Broadcast December 25th 2008 @ 6.00pm (13.1m viewers)

Following David Tennant’s announcement that he would be leaving the series rumours were rife regarding who would be replacing him. Unfortunately, the possibility of a potential future incarnation of The Doctor overshadowed The Next Doctor. David Morrissey is excellent throughout but too much time is spent dwelling on him being The Doctor, complete with his own companion, a sonic screwdriver and “TARDIS”. But more time needs to be dedicated to explaining everything away and the viewers are left feeling like The Next Doctor is a bit of a promotional ruse for the regeneration of the Tenth Doctor. As a result, the return of the Cybermen only have a few brief moments.

Memorable Moment (Spoiler Warning)

The trailer included at the conclusion of ‘Journey’s End’ alluded to Cybermen stomping through a misty graveyard. That particular sequence is very impressive, with the modern Cybus Cybermen looking their best. The are also assisted by the equally cold and steely Dervla Kirwan as Mercy Hartigan. The other Cyberman elements are far less successful.

There were two new additions to Cyber-history and they add little to the plot.  Firstly the Cybershade, an assimilated cat or dog, does look good with the copper head design. However, it adds nothing to the story but a comedic chase. The Cyberking is even less impressive. It’s supposedly a spaceship but looks like a Cyberman Transformer. The Transformers movie starring Megan Fox and Shia Lebeouf had been released the previous year and appears to have influenced the creation of the Cyberking. Logic also dictates that surely a massive Cyberman stomping around London would’ve been noticed. This rewriting of history proved to be the icing on a flat Christmas cake.
