The Runaway Bride
First Broadcast December 25th 2006 @ 7.00pm (9.38m viewers)
Following on from the devastating departure of Rose Tyler, there was no let up in the action. Catherine Tate is superb throughout. Donna Noble is a bit coarser than we would see in Series 4 but the character is just so funny. The script features some great lines which Tate, at the height of her comedic powers, delivers brilliantly. There is also a darker side. The Doctor is still mourning the loss of Rose. Bitter and resentful, it is a very different side to the Time Lord. The fact that he needs saving from himself during his dealings with the Racnoss is startling.
Memorable Moment (Spoiler Warning)
The Empress of the Racnoss is one of the most extraordinary creations in Doctor Who’s history. Yes it’s a giant space spider. But the scale of it is incredibly impressive. Amazingly actress Sarah Parish is also found deep beneath within the red behemoth. Anyone fortunate enough to have seen the creature on display in Manchester, Earls Court, Glasgow or Coventry would’ve had their breath taking away by it’s size. The ability of the production team to have delivered such a creation is a testament to their skill.
Although Donna Noble would reappear in the show, to great celebration and affection, sadly the Empress of the Racnoss has yet to return to our TV screens. However, she is due to reappear with Big Finish in 2017 for the second volume of their Classic Doctors, New Monsters range. When that release does come out listeners will immediately have images of the colossal spider which taunted the Doctor and Donna ten years ago today.
