Netflix have announced the cast for their prestigious new crime drama, Criminal. Including former Doctor, David Tennant.
David Tennant has enjoyed one of the most successful post-Doctor Who careers among the Doctors. He’s moved smoothly from Doctor Who to Broadchurch, and then from Jessica Jones to Good Omens. And it’s also a run of hits that seems unlikely to be broken now, with his latest role having just been announced today. Tennant is joining the cast of new Netflix crime drama series Criminal.
David Tennant’s previous role as Broadchurch’s DCI Alec Hardy gave him plenty of experience as a detective who prided himself on his ability to break suspects in the interview room. But Criminal sees the shoe on the other foot. Each episode of Criminal is set entirely within the interrogation room of a police station. And each story follows the battle of wits and wills between the police and their suspects. Tennant will star as a man who becomes the focus of the investigation into a terrible crime. But can his calm exterior be shattered to expose the truth? Or is he more innocent than he first appears?
Tennant is joined in Criminal by fellow Whoniverse veterans, Katherine Kelly and Hayley Atwell
Among those across the table from Tennant on the right side of the law will be Katherine Kelly, whose Miss Quill was one of the most memorable things in Doctor Who spin-off Class. Meanwhile, another episode will also place Hayley Atwell in the hot seat as another person of interest to the investigation. Atwell is most famous for her role as Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel films and TV series. But she’s also no stranger to the Doctor Who universe, having appeared in several Big Finish plays.
The twelve episode series is composed of twelve separate stories, with episodes set in four different locations across Europe and presented (with subtitles) in different languages. Naturally enough, Tennant, Kelly and Atwell all appear in the UK episodes. The series promises to be tense and full of twists and turns. After all, Criminal is from the mind of George Kay – one of the writers of the smash hit Killing Eve. As always, Netflix is currently keeping the exact drop date for Criminal secret for the moment. However, we do know it will be available to stream sometime this Autumn.
