The mysterious Class has just gotten prettier. The Doctor Who spinoff, currently filming for a release later this year, was spotted this week in Cardiff. There was not necessarily a rift in the sky of the Welsh city, but the streets were filled with scattered pink petals that had fallen from above. From the photos, the petals look like rose or cherry blossoms.

Class was announced last April, and films at Cardiff University. The show is set at the fictional Coal Hill School, which has long been a fixture in the world of Doctor Who. Coal Hill made its first appearance in the very first episode of the show; Susan, the First Doctor’s granddaughter, was a student at Coal Hill back in 1963. Coal Hill is also the school where Clara taught.  Her maths teacher boyfriend Danny Pink, also worked there. The school is also featured in several episodes with Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor. It is students at Coal Hill who spread the word of frozen airplanes in the sky in The Magician’s Apprentice.

The Cast

The current Coal Hill School is filled with a cast of pupils who, according the BBC, ‘have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, schoolwork, sex, sorrow – and possibly the end of existence.’

Even worse than the dating troubles, these students are aware of a larger problem. The show’s creator, Patrick Ness, places the students in a precarious situation.  “All the time-travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.”

According to producer Steven Moffat, Class and Doctor Who Executive Producer, “Class is dark and sexy and right now. I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy – it’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen.”

Class features newcomers Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah. Their teacher is played by Katharine Kelly, one of the stars of the second series of Happy Valley.

Minor Spoiler

Ness did let a bit of a spoiler slip about the characters.  Evidently, this will be an inclusive as well as diverse cast as one of the lead male characters will have a boyfriend.

We’re still not sure which character.

As Moffat says, ‘Coal Hill School has been part of Doctor Who since the very first shoot in 1963, but this new show is anything but history.’

But we’re still trying to figure out the thousands of pink petals.
