The popular (and frankly gorgeous) steelbook range continues with Doctor Who: The Specials

In 2009, Doctor Who faced the most seismic changes since its revival. David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor, and one of the – if not the – most popular Doctors ever was stepping down. But as Matt Smith and incoming showrunner Steven Moffat geared up for Series Five, Tennant and Russell T Davies were anything but winding down. Between Series Four and Series Five they created a five specials, epic in scale, ambition and emotion. The specials collected in this new steelbook provide a fitting capstone to the Tennant/Davies era. Now those specials can be relieved in HD on the Doctor Who: The Specials Steelbook. And with Planet of the Dead marking the changeover point when the show began being filmed in HD, this is set to be the most impressive looking Steelbook yet.

The limited edition Blu-ray Steelbook range featuring new and exclusive artwork, as always. This time, it comes courtesy of the popular and prolific Tom Webster, whose previous art had featured on the official site and many Big Finish releases.

The set includes the following live action episodes.

  • The Next Doctor
  • Planet of the Dead
  • The Waters of Mars
  • The End of Time, Part One
  • The End of Time, Part Two

In addition, it also features the special animated episode produced for 2009, which teamed Tennant with future wife Georgia as his one-off companion Cassie. For completeness, the earlier animated from 2007, co-starring Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones, is also included.

The Blu-rays also the following special features: commentary with cast & crew, deleted scenes, David Tennant’s video diary, Doctor Who Confidential, Doctor Who at the Proms, Doctor Who at Comic Con and more.

The Specials stars David Tennant as The Doctor, with Catherine Tate and Bernard Cribbins returning as Donna and Wilf in The End of Time to face off against John Simm (The Master). Meanwhile, David Morrissey, Velile Tshabalala, Michelle Ryan, and Lindsay Duncan are among the star names who aid the Doctor in his companionless travels in the other specials. Add in cameos by Billie Piper (Rose), Freema Agyeman (Martha), Noel Clarke (Mickey), John Barrowman (Captain Jack), and Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) and Doctor Who: The Specials assembles one of the greatest line-ups in the series’ history.

The set will be released on Monday 2nd September and is already available for pre-orders from Amazon, HMV and Zoom.
