Blake’s 7 is the new Big Finish Weekly Freebie, with discounts also available on Blake’s 7: A Rebellion Reborn… with Benedict Cumberbatch!

In the 1970s, Blake’s 7 was like Doctor Who’s older, university student, sibling. More cynical and politically aware, but still cut from the same cloth of wit and adventure. And, of course, sharing many of the same writers, directors and crew as the BBC’s other flagship SF show. Two weeks ago Blake’s 7 joined BritBox to reach an entire new generation of viewers. Perfect timing then for Big Finish Productions to offer an opportunity to discover their audio dramas about the Liberator crew. They’ve made the first episode of Blake’s 7, free to download for one week only! This reimagined version of the 1970s BBC TV sci-fi series was originally produced by B7 Media in 2008.

Blake’s 7 is reborn in a script by popular Doctor Who author Ben Aaronvitch, and features a new all-star cast

Blake’s 7: Rebel by Ben Aaronvitch (Doctor Who: Battlefield) stars Derek Riddell (Sir Robert, Tooth and Claw) as Roj Blake, the role made famous by Gareth Thomas. He features alongside Colin Salmon (Dr Moon, Silence in the Library) as Avon, Blake’s dangerous and ruthless ally of necessity. Meanwhile, Daniela Nardini is Servalan, the power obsessed supreme ruler of the Federation originally played by Jacqueline Pearce. Rebel, set in the early days of Blake’s quest to bring down the Federation’s corrupt regime, brings more atmosphere and moral complexity than ever before. And it’s a must-listen for Blake’s 7 fans. Whether they watched the original run on their cathode ray tubes, or streamed it for the first time this month.

The offer is part of Big Finish’s ongoing Weekly Freebies, where a new story is available for free every week. These are made available to download exclusively from the Big Finish web site’s Weekly Deals page for one week only. Each story can be unlocked by anyone who has registered for a Big Finish account (which is free to create) and played on the Big Finish listening app (which is free to install). Accompanying each free release is a selection of discounts on related titles.

Blake’s 7: Rebel

In the third century of the second calendar, the galactic Federation, once a beacon of democracy and peace, has become a corrupt tyranny. Freedom and Justice are things of the past.

Roj Blake stood up for ordinary people. When the establishment tried intimidation, he laughed in their faces; when they tried to crush him, he fought back. They tried to brainwash him into obedience, but he broke their conditioning. Finally, they framed him for crimes he didn’t commit and sentenced him to permanent exile on the notorious prison planet of Cygnus Alpha.

The Federation thinks it has seen the last of Roj Blake… The Federation will wish it had.
