There’s a trio of audiobook tales to treasure from The Worlds of Blake’s 7, due for release throughout 2021 and 2022 from Big Finish Productions

Big Finish have released details of The Rule of Death, Bayban Ascending and Zero Point. These three new full-length audiobooks further explore the worlds of Blake’s 7. The BBC’s other major SF program of the 1970s, Blake’s 7 came from the mind of Doctor Who’s Terry Nation. And these stories further explore that galaxy of authoritarianism, far flung colonies and dark criminal underworlds. They invite listeners to discover a Clone Master living in secret, go on a journey into a mercenary killer’s past and enter a crime syndicate with the crew of the starship Liberator – with more at stake than ever before…

Producer Xanna Eve Chown said: “I’m really excited for these three audiobooks! We get to meet old acquaintances such as Clonemaster Fen, explore the shady world of the Terra Nostra and, of course, find out more about the majestic – and utterly ruthless – Bayban the Butcher (‘Babe’ to his friends)!”

The Rule of Death

Due for release in September 2021, The Rule of Death is a full-length audiobook written by Trevor Baxendale. It’s released alongside full cast box set The Clone Masters, which revisits the enigmatic race from the TV episode Weapon.

When Orac picks up information about a Clone Master living in secret on an outlying planet, Blake is intrigued. Then, a message from the freed bond-slave, Rashel, makes visiting the outpost a priority: the Blake Clone is dying. But things are never as straightforward as they seem, and with psycho-strategist Carnell lurking in the shadows, this visit soon becomes a life or death battle for all the Liberator crew…

Bayban Ascending

Then, in December 2021, listeners can hear Nigel Fairs’ Bayban Ascending. The audiobook complements the full cast box set Bayban the Butcher, which also features the return of the eponymous criminal. Bayban was first seen, as played by Doctor Who star Colin Baker, in 1980’s City at the Edge of the World.

“My mother… Oh yes, I had a mother. Wonderful woman. Truly evil person. She had a saying. ‘Babe,’ she used to say – she called me Babe. ‘Babe,’ she used to say. ‘Treat every hour as though it’s your last.’”

Son is a diligent menial worker on the planet Calross. He has no idea who his father is. He lives with his mother by the Federation Factory where he works. And he has two friends: a computer geek called Vann and a manual worker called Olag Gan. Son is having a secret relationship with Vel, Gan’s woman. She tells him that she is able to channel her psychic gift through a broken piece of necklace that she stole from an ancient burial site on one of the outer worlds.

Holding the broken necklace, Son has a vision that he will achieve greatness. When it comes true, he decides to find its missing parts hiring a grizzled old pilot called ‘Bayban the Butcher’ to help him…

Zero Point

Finally, in January 2022, Zero Point by Scott Harrison is released alongside full cast box set The Terra Nostra. Both dive deep into the murky underworld of the dangerous organisation first encountered in the TV story Shadow.

During a skirmish with a small patrol of Federation pursuit ships, Orac is badly damaged. There is only one person who can repair the super-computer: Federation Doctor Brynn Pellas. Tarrant takes Orac to her base, unaware that the planet she lives on is now under the control of the Terra Nostra – and Pellas is in the crime syndicate’s back pocket. Pellas can repair Orac – but first, Blake and his crew must steal a secret Federation weapon for the Terra Nostra. Codename: Zero Point.
