Thought ‘Firefly’ was the only short-lived sci-fi series that developed a cult following? Think again! Big Finish, makers of fine audio dramas for Doctor Who, Torchwood and more, now turn their eye to a cult 1987 TV programme. Star Cops was originally broadcast on Mondays on BBC Two. The series began on the 6th July and ran until the 31st August 1987, until industrial action withheld the tenth episode and it was discontinued.
The 1987 classic sci-fi police drama ‘Star Cops’ will continue its space-age legacy in two new box sets from Big Finish Productions.
Created by Chris Boucher (who also worked on Blake’s 7 and the Doctor Who TV series), Star Cops is set in the near future (2027) when man has begun to colonise space. The Star Cops, led by Nathan Spring (played by David Calder) provide law enforcement for humanity spreading among the stars.
Producer David Richardson said “I was working at the BBC when Star Cops was made. I fell in love with the series and its magnificent cast, but I could never have suspected that 30 years later I would be producing brand new episodes!”
As a result, the new episodes he discusses will be released in two box sets. Part one is due for release in May 2018, with the second boxset out in December 2018. A total of eight stories will be released over the two box sets. Furthermore, these form one overall story, under the title, Star Cops: Mother Earth.
The four adventures in the first box set are:
- 1.1 One of Our Cops is Missing by Andrew Smith
- 1.2 Tranquility and Other Illusions by Ian Potter
- 1.3 Lockdown by Christopher Hatherall
- 1.4 The Thousand Ton Bomb by Guy Adams
Original cast return for these adventures, including:
- David Calder (Call the Midwife, Motherland, Inside No.9)
- Trevor Cooper (This Country, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who)
- Linda Newton (All Saints, My Two Wives)
They are joined by:
- Rakhee Thakrar (Eastenders, Doctor Who)
- Philip Oliver (Brookside, Doctor Who)

The two Star Cops four-disc box sets are available to pre-order now priced at £28 on CD or £25 on download each. Or you can pre-order series one and two together at £50 on CD or £45 on download from the Big Finish Website located here
