The Sixth Doctor and Peri return to face the horrors of Harry Houdini’s War in the latest monthly release from Big Finish
This week sees two new releases in Big Finish’s Doctor Who: The Monthly Adventures range. And the first features a reunion for the Sixth Doctor with an old friend in Harry Houdini’s War.
Ever since arch-namedropper the Third Doctor first mentioned knowing Houdini, the skills the Time Lord learned from the escapologist have come in very handy. In 2013’s Smoke and Mirrors, Big Finish finally brought the two together on audio. And in follow up Harry Houdini’s War the two meet again.
Steve Lyons, author of Harry Houdini’s War, was delighted to write his first full length audio story for the Sixth Doctor. calling it “a real treat.” But for him, pairing Peri with Houdini was almost as fun. “One day, I’d like to really explore the relationship between the Doctor and Peri during television season 22 – but this isn’t that day. They don’t actually spend a lot of time together in this story. Instead, they take it in turns to partner Harry Houdini, and those are the scenes I really had fun writing. Harry has a touch of the Sixth Doctor’s pomposity – at least, he does the way I’ve characterised him – and they spark off each other really well. And Peri can undermine Harry with a sarcastic quip just as effectively as she does the Doctor!”
Harry Houdini’s War stars Colin Baker as the Doctor, with Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown. John Schwab guest stars as Harry Houdini.
