UNIT Eras: Hostile Universe brings Big Finish’s UNIT range up to date, with an episode set in UNIT Tower

Big Finish have announced the first story set during the current Bad Wolf Era of the Doctor Who. The new UNIT Eras range will feature boxsets contains stories from right across the history of the international task force. These four stories reveal how they defend the Earth from alien threats when the Doctor isn’t around. The first set, four episode anthology Hostile Universe, is out in April. It contains a new adventure for Mel (Bonnie Langford) and the Vlinx (Nicholas Briggs) as UNIT Tower comes under siege. Other settings include during the events of The Stolen Earth, as UNIT goes up against the Daleks. It also revisits Flux as UNIT goes underground following its official disbandment.

Other stories in Hostile Universe include missions for Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Jon Culshaw), and Sarah Jane Smith (Sadie Miller) and Harry Sullivan (Christopher Naylor.) It will also feature the Big Finish debut of Colonel Mace (Rupert Holliday-Evans.) Mace appeared on television as UNIT’s leader in the 2008 Doctor Who story The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky.

Doing the best they can against impossible odds

Producer Heather Challands said: “UNIT has long been a reliable, exciting and ever-evolving part of the world of Doctor Who. It’s one of my favourite parts, showcasing the flaws and triumphs of human nature through iconic characters such as the Brigadier, Osgood, Harry Sullivan and Kate Stewart.

“I was thrilled by the opportunity to delve deeper into times when the TARDIS isn’t around and the Doctor’s friends simply have to do the best that they can against impossible odds. This new range is an anthology series, with each story standing alone, going from the 1970s right up to the 2020s, to see how much UNIT has changed in its long history.

Hostile Universe features a close encounter with Daleks during The Stolen Earth, finds the Vlinx feeling a bit frosty, shows the toll UNIT takes on some of its soldiers, and answers the question of how Kate Stewart was spending her time after her house was blown up!”

The Worlds of Doctor Who – UNIT Eras: Hostile Universe is now available to pre-order as a digital download to own for just £24.99, exclusively here.

  1. The Vlinx was played on set by Aidan Cook and dubbed in post in his early appearances by Nicholas Briggs then latterly by Aidan himself.
