Big Finish and Doctor Who Stars Nominated for BBC Audio Drama Awards

BIG FINISH - The War Master - Beneath the Viscoid

Big Finish will be well represented at the 2019 BBC Audio Drama Awards, with three nominations

Sir Derek Jacobi has been nominated as Best Actor for his role as The Master in The War Master 1.1: Beneath the Viscoid by Nicholas Briggs. The Big Finish audio play sees Jacobi return to the role for the first time since 2007’s Utopia. The plot centers on the Master trapped on a water planet and trying to pass himself off as the Doctor. Though Jacobi has won Emmys, BAFTAs, SAG Awards, Tony Awards and Laurence Olivier Awards, this marks his first BBC Audio Drama Award nomination. Scott Handcock directed and produced The War Master series.

As Blogtor Who said in our original review, in Beneath the Viscoid “Jacobi showcases every single reason why he made a brilliant Master: manipulative, devious, callous, all whilst being immensely charming.”

Blind Terror (c) Big Finish

Blind Terror: The Gods of Frost and ATA Girl are both nominated for Best Online Drama at the BBC Audio Drama Awards

Also nominated is Blind Terror: The Gods of Frost by Guy Adams, for Best Online Drama. Part of the Big Finish Originals range, Gods of Frost is a truly spine-tingling tale in the gothic tradition. It casts Torchwood’s Eve Myles as the young widow who comes to the sinister Hodder Hall. But she’s ill prepared for the horrors to come over the following six episodes. Blind Terror: The Gods of Frost is directed and produced by Scott Handcock.

Blogtor Who’s review summed up The Gods of Frost as “a triumph. Strong writing, performances, direction and sound design. It will surely stand out as one of the strongest pieces of horror ever to grace the audio format.”

ATA Girl – Big Finish Original

The final Big Finish nomination is for another Big Finish Original, ATA Girl, also for Best Online Drama.

ATA Girl is a four episode celebration of the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary during World War II. These brave women risked their lives to ensure that all manner of aircraft, from fighter jets to bombers to transport plane, were flown across Allied territory to be delivered to the fight. Directed by Doctor Who’s Louise Jameson, an all female writing team tells these women’s powerful stories.

The Blogtor Who review said ATA Girl “never falters into melodrama but show the stoic strength of these independent and daring pilots… ATA Girl … is a beautiful homage to the brave women of the ATA.”

Other famous names from the world of Doctor Who will be sharing the stage with Big Finish on the night

Former Doctor David Tennant will be going head to head with Jacobi for the Best Actor Award. Tennant has been nominated for his role in BBC Radio 4’s production of Wild Honey.

Wild Honey is based on a famously unnamed comedy by illustrious Russian playwright Anton Checkov. It sees Tennant, in a role originated by Sir Ian McKellen, play a provincial school teacher with severe women trouble.

Eve Myles is also nominated for Best Actress, though not for The Gods of Frost. Rather it’s as Emily Steel in Steel’s own account of having an abortion in 19 weeks, having received a diagnosis of Down’s Syndrome for the fetus. Myles gives a heart rending performance of a brutally honest script.

19 Weeks is also nominated as Best Original Single Drama.

Also Nominated…

Also of note, Doctor Who novelist AL Kennedy’s Subterranean Homesick Blues is nominated for Best Original Series or Serial. And Anansi Boys, adapted from the novel by Doctor’s Wife writer Neil Gaiman, is nominated for Best Use of Sound. Meanwhile, Dead Ringers, which includes regular Big Finish writer Nev Fountain among its writing team, has received a nod for Best Scripted Comedy.

You can get a full list of nominees from the BBC Audio Drama Awards homepage.
