Big Finish - The New Counter-Measures: Who Killed Toby Kinsella?
Big Finish – The New Counter-Measures: Who Killed Toby Kinsella?

Big Finish brings us a special feature-length release, forging a new era for Counter-Measures.

It’s Christmas 1973. Nearly ten years have elapsed since the Counter-Measures group vanished. Only one of the remaining members is officially alive. But that is about to change. When Sir Toby is killed by an enigmatic assailant, his friends fly in from around the globe to attend the funeral where they discover that the truth of their colleague’s murder lies hidden in his past. A dangerous killer is out for revenge. A terrible assassination is planned. When ghosts walk the street, there’s only one team you need.

Counter Measures is an unlikely but successful Doctor Who spin-off, featuring characters from the Sylvester McCoy era televised story Remembrance of The Daleks. Professor Rachel Jenson, Allison Williams and Group Captain Gilmore teamed up in the 60’s to help the Doctor defeat the Daleks and along with Sir Toby Kinsella later formed the group Counter Measures. Until now this series has epitomised the 60’s, but in this latest instalment, we’re moving forward a decade into the 70’s. The previous seasons really captured the 60’s vibe and whilst many will be sad to see Counter Measures move on in time, this new direction is a new lease on life for the assembled characters.

Writers John Dorney and Ken Bentley (also director) have formed a perfect collaboration to create a wonderfully archetypal 70’s spy adventure. The new setting acts to forward the plot and really open up the possibilities for this great spin-off.

Pamela Salem, Karen Gledhill and Simon Williams have such wonderful chemistry. This story almost feels like a reflection of the three’s real life events. It’s much like the reunion that Big Finish gave them when they came back together to record their own series. Joined by Hugh Ross the four turn in top-notch performances, with great supporting performances from Raad Rawi and Belinda Stewart-Wilson in particular.

This story is a great jumping on point if you’re new to this series and want a fresh start. The piece leaves the stage set for a whole new era for Counter Measures, I can’t wait to see where they next take the series?

BLOGTOR WHO RATING 9/10
