Ahead of the New Year’s Day Special Resolution, Blogtor Who profiles its director, Wayne Yip
It’s a mark of the respect that Resolution director Wayne Yip commands that he’s become the first pre-Chibnall era director to be called back to join the new Doctor Who team.
Yip previously directed The Lie of the Land and Empress of Mars in Series 10. His wider body of work has shown a visual stylishness grounded on intense use of colour and light. Doctor Who spinoff Class may have only lasted one series but Wip helmed what were generally agreed to be the best episodes. In Detained, he took the claustrophobic premise of the characters being trapped in a single classroom for the entire episode. He made it visually fresh in every shot while getting from the young cast their best performances of the season. Meanwhile his The Metaphysical Engine or What Quill Did brought Katherine Kelly’s Ms Quill on a voyage through the metaphysical planes of belief in a riot of surreal colour and darkness.
Yip has brought his flair and imagination to many high profile series
Yip’s reputation goes far beyond the Doctor Who universe, though. To list the shows he’s worked on is to list shows famous for their incredible and innovative visuals. Yip was one of the visual architects of Channel 4’s jaw droppingly stylish conspiracy serial Utopia. No less striking is Happy!, the darkly comic series about an alcoholic hitman hunting for his abducted daughter with the aid of her imaginary friend – a cartoon flying unicorn.
Shows such as the community service superhero drama Misfits, Netflix’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and the violently funny adaptation of the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic Preacher.
Doctor Who’s specials traditionally aim to be more lush and spectacular than the norm. To be ‘a series opener and finale rolled into one’ as Chris Chibnall describes it. Yip’s history certainly shows he’s up to the task of maintaining that tradition.
