The 2017 Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo is back and this time they’re hosting the Twelfth Doctor, Mr. Peter Capaldi!
So what does this mean for Calgary fans? It means that for 4 days, fans of pop culture will unite and let their inner heroes and villains shine and Doctor Who is making its presence known! Peter Capaldi will be on site for 2 days, April 28th and 29th and we can be sure to see an increase in Doctor Who related merchandise, memorabilia and, of course, cosplay.
Capaldi Panel
During the event, Capaldi will be around to sign pictures or products and he’ll be taking part in photo ops along with a Q&A panel. The panel took place yesterday at the Stampede Corral where he was met with a full room of fans of all ages eager to ask him questions.
Garret Wang of Star Trek: Voyager fame moderated the panel and he brought out a lot of fun. Peter Capaldi himself was, of course, a gracious and thoughtful guest who answered fan favourite questions as if they were asked for the first time and was humble despite the compliments flying his way. One adorable question that came from two young girls dressed up as Ashilder asked Capaldi who his favourite companion was. The crowd laughed as it was the impossible question with two sweet fans there, he jokingly replied neutrally with, “K-9′. She great”.
Another unexpected answer came when Capaldi was asked where he would go in the TARDIS. “I would go back and see my folks”, he said. “Because they’re not here anymore”.
Talk soon turned to the new series and new companion Pearl Mackie. How is Pearl Mackie? came the question to which Capaldi answered “She’s great! Largely the world of Doctor Who is new to both Pearl and Bill, so her reaction is also new”. But what is brand new for the companion is the beginning of the end for Capaldi’s incarnation of the Doctor. A sad time for all. So much so that Capaldi confessed that the read-through for episode 12 was so sad that he rushed right through it to avoid the emotion.
Incredible Doctor Who Cosplay
In the hour spent chatting Capaldi yet again managed to wow fans with his wit and his charm in another hugely successful panel. Attendees of the Calgary Expo were not just Calgarians either. The event brought people from around Canada and the world. One couple dressed as Missy and the 12th Doctor came from Arizona to meet Capaldi again!
Torchwood & James Marsters
Another Whoniverse guest doing a panel on Friday was none other than Captain John Hart, of Torchwood fame, James Marsters who answered a broad range of in depth questions spanning his career. While there was little talk of Torchwood a question about Big Finish audios was asked, and if James Marsters would be doing any in the future. With a humorous response Marsters said it was unlikely because his Agent is very smart and charges too much. He gets parts but is rarely asked back due to the hefty price. The audience appreciated the comment and he ended by saying he would of course be interested.
The Calgary Expo is a galaxy full of fun and friendly fans eager to talk about their favourite fandom and The Doctor is at the top of the list!
Calgary Expo concludes on Sunday, April 30th. Tickets for Saturday are sold out but tickets for Sunday will be sold at the door.
